Why did you become a mentor and coach?
I spent 15 years working in a hybrid marketing communications role for small businesses and nonprofits, and also my own, as a female entrepreneur with big visions and dreams. I felt the overwhelm that comes with being part of a small staff, working solo, and having a small budget. Moreover, I also felt like something was missing. I was always hunting for guidance and mentoring, especially when I was fresh out of school, for someone to really take me under his/her wing and share their wisdom about the work as well as management, leadership, creativity/innovation, and handing workplace situations. This all caught up to me after four years of running my own business – struggling to take a salary and take vacation, always feeling like the work and I were not enough. I felt lost, stressed, exhausted, and uninspired. I also felt like I really wasn’t making the different in others’ lives that I had hoped to – or mine for that matter.
I slowly put the brakes on that business and hired a business coach myself and in time, found more clarity about my values, my inspiration, and the work that brings me joy. I love purpose driven creative entrepreneurship and the idealism that radiates from those who choose to serve in this way. And as an artist myself, I identify with the optimism, idealism and challenges. The very thing I struggled to find for all those years was exactly what I was being called to be – a coach and mentor.
What makes you an expert?
I bring nearly 20 years of practical experience in small-medium sized business and nonprofit administration, arts/culture/creativity, leadership, strategy, marketing, communication, and design to my clients. I ran a separate creative arts agency for 6 years, served on several boards, and put myself out there as a creative entrepreneur, and created the leadership opportunities I craved.
I also bring the practical experience of having done (and continue to do) this high level strategy and mindset work on myself.
Who are your ideal clients?
I work with passionate, driven soul-centered creative entrepreneurs and those who wish to explore their creative sides. These are typically women with a deep sense of purpose, vision, and desire to serve, and to express themselves creatively. They are typically wondering how to get started, in startup, or a little further along and going at it solo. They want to work through fears, feel supported on all fronts and be able to focus on the work they love.
With what kind of personality do you work best?
I work best with clients who are ready to take different action in their life and business, are committed to long-term growth and change, and understand the importance of investing in themselves and doing the work.
My clients are purposeful, passionate, open, curious, creative, hard working, responsible.
With what kind of personality or client do you not work well?
Mentoring and coaching takes time, dedication, an openness and willingness to be vulnerable and learn, and commitment to action. If you are looking for the magic pill or a quick fix or for me to tell you “all the things,” we are not a good fit. Likewise, if you are not willing to roll up your sleeves and do the work, we will not work well together.
I’m happy to share how I work; however if you’re someone who negates everything and replies with, “That won’t work for me.” Or “But my business is different.” Or cuts me off as we discuss strategy because the only thing you care about is me telling you how to do all the things on Facebook, or you need constant convincing or explaining about investing in yourself, we are definitely not a good fit.
How do you work? What can I expect?
I work in packaged sessions via phone, or through an on-site training visit and from time to time will offer trainings that can be downloaded.
In my packaged coaching sessions, I work like an advisor and coach in that I audit of client’s processes, systems and marketing. As the client, you do the work upfront. Then I see what’s there, what isn’t and what’s working and what’s not. I offer phone calls or in-person meetings (depending on location), training tools and tips, structure and accountability. As a mentor and coach, I bring my own practical experience as an entrepreneur to each client and so I offer a lot of empathy and understanding.
Results can and do happen however, there are no magic pills and success isn’t an overnight thing. It’s a process and it takes time, commitment and consistency. The client has to self identify and self select and want to invest and do the work. In my experience, one-offs do not work. For this reason, there are no hourly rates or project fees based on hours. When I work like this, I’m all in and I need my clients to be all in, be committed, and be willing to do the work.
You can expect a lot of clarity, discovery, celebration, structure, accountability and a strong push when needed. I always start with a Getting Acquainted Call to make sure we’re the right match for one another.
What I do not offer:
It’s important to be clear about what I don’t do. I won’t do the work for you. I’m not a consultant or someone on your staff. I’m not the implementor. This is because my time is best spent guiding vs. doing.
Can I just sign up for one session?
No. Results can and do happen however, there are no magic pills and success isn’t an overnight thing. It’s a process and it takes time, commitment and consistency. The client has to self identify and self select and want to invest and do the work. In my experience, one-offs do not work. You’ll experience the impact with every small choice and change you make in each conversation with those around you.
Remember, consistent action creates consistent results. I am ready to commit 100% to you and your goals and I only work with those who are willing to make that same level of commitment to the training and coaching process.
What is the difference between a coach and a mentor and/or other helping professionals?
A coach is an objective listener who helps provide a different perspective on situations the client is facing. Coaches act as a supporter and guide while helping you become aware of and overcome your blind spots. Coaching is a partnership between the coach and client meant to take you from where you are to where you want to be, and is therefore both future- and action-oriented. Mentors share experiences to help frame situations. I have found for me that acting as both serves both me and my clients.
While consultants help clients, their focus might be on pulling apart business processes, providing advice or solutions, implementing those solutions.
I act as both a coach and mentor. I feel there is comfort from having someone who can both relate to you as well as pull you out of stuck points.
Does coaching really work?
Yes! And I speak from my own experience working with a a few coaches as well as the work I’ve done with clients.
What kind of results can I expect?
You’ll become clearer, confident, inspired and empowered. You’ll get into action.
Why do I need you? Can’t I do this on my own?
Many people attempt the DIY approach and wind up feeling isolated, frustrated and stuck. The question is, if you could do it on your own why haven’t you already? I’m guessing it’s because you are overwhelmed. Everyone can benefit from an objective perspective. We all need a support system to help us get past our blind spots and hold us accountable for our results.
Top athletes rely on their coaches to bring out their strengths, improve on their weaknesses, and push their best performance. The same is true in life and business.
I’ve never invested in myself like this before – How can I justify this expense?
I know first-hand that investing in yourself can be scary. Coming from a DIY mentality, as well as the “lack” mindset that runs rapid in small businesses and nonprofits, hiring my first coach was hard. However, the results I experienced – both from a mindset perspective as well as from a business strategy perspective – justified and ultimately covered the expense. I also know that having clarity, support, and accountability are priceless.
If I’m not quite ready to start, is there a way to sample your work?
Yes – I have a download available to you for free. It’s called Brand New You and it’s a simple guide to clarity on vision and values as they relate to your personal brand — which as an entrepreneur is YOU. It’s rooted in mindset work and yet still delivers terrific strategy. It’s a perfect entry point to any small business who has felt overwhelmed with digital technologies. You can sign up to get it via the homepage.
I still have some questions – Can we talk?
Of course. Set up a Getting Acquainted Call with me and we can discuss your needs and see if we’re a good fit.
